Vanguard 49er
The newest Olympic class, the 49er is the brainchild of Austrailian 18 ft. skiff designer, Julian Bethwaite. The 49er sails at extreme speeds, but remains managable for the two sailors. All the benefits of a light-weight, high tech construction are combined with strict one-design principles and calss rules, making the 49er an incredible sailing machine.
The hull and deck of the 49er are constructed of an epoxy E glass laminate sandwiched around a PVC foam core and then vacuum bagged. Carbon fiber and unidirectional reinforcements are built in and around the mast step and shroud areas. The solid wings are of similar construciton to the hull which provide added stability and ease of movement for the sailors. The foils are foam cored epoxy with fiberglass and carbon fiber reinforcements. The result is a solid platform that is extremely light weight.
